This is a baptismal gown which was possibly worn by Lewis Mortimer Spencer, father to Claudia Spencer Kirkpatrick and by his grandson, Elmer E. Kirkpatrick, Jr. It was also likely worn by Elmer Ellsworth Kirkpatrick, Jr. in a studio photograph when he was about one year of age. The gown is gathered at the bodice with small cap sleeves, and it laces up the back.

John E. Kirkpatrick likely was issued the sewing kit sometime during his Naval Academy years (1927-1931). The contents include brown, white and black thread, along with a safety pin, buttons, a small piece of cloth and another small sewing kit. The second kit is in a heavy paper casing with a picture of the Worth Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas, on the front. It is believed that John E. Kirkpatrick used these sewing kits throughout his travels for several years.

Kirkpatrick is considered a “plank owner” due to his assignment on the U. S. S. North Carolina when it was commissioned. This was presented to Admiral Kirkpatrick in his home in February 2004.
